Commissions

Starting a Commission
Welcome to the commissions page, where you’ll find out more about the process of commissioning a painting from Paul!
Once you know roughly what kind of painting you’ll be looking for, such as the size, complexity and where the painting will be hanging, head over to the contact page and fill out the enquiry form (once submitted, Paul aims to respond as fast as possible).
Further details can then be discussed via email, such as refining the number of subjects, the exact size and complexity of the painting. Complexity can mean adding background scenery, a full body with detailed clothing, added props or furniture. A non-complex painting generally means a figure or head-and-shoulders with a plain background, such as a generic gradient or single colour.
Once the details of the commission have been confirmed and the quote accepted, you’ll receive an invoice for the initial payment. A 50% deposit is required to secure the commission with the rest payable once the artwork is completed (and prior to shipping).
Photo Shoots
Whenever possible Paul prefers to take his own reference photos, however he can work from supplied photos depending on the quality of the image. In either case, Paul understands that the commissioning process is collaborative and both artist and client need to be happy with the choices made. Before the artwork is started, a mock-up image will be created by Paul and sent to you for your approval. Once approved, the creation of the artwork will begin.
Artwork completion
A painting can take between a few months to a year to complete. The timeframe can depend on several factors: size of canvas, complexity of the composition, artists availability and whether varnishing is required). Please state in your initial enquiry if your commission is a gift and has a specific completion date (eg Christmas, birthday or retirement) and availability can be discussed via email.
Framing and shipping
Framing can be discussed at any point in the commission process. If the painting is on a pre-stretched canvas, then this is already made to hang, however a frame adds a new dimension to the artwork and helps separate it from its surroundings. A frame can also make the artwork more secure and protect the canvas during transit.
Shipping options and fees can be discussed once the artwork is completed.
